Pet product AQL inspection guide: defects, sampling and shipment release

Sampling is a release tool, not a quality promise. An AQL-based inspection samples part of a production lot against a written defect list and agreed acceptance plan. ISO describes acceptance sampling by attributes as a family of sampling systems. It does not replace product design, process control, laboratory testing or 100% checks for specifically agreed critical features. Buyers should define lot, sample plan, defect classes, measurements and disposition before inspection.

THE QUICK ANSWER

An AQL-based inspection samples part of a production lot against a written defect list and agreed acceptance plan. ISO describes acceptance sampling by attributes as a family of sampling systems. It does not replace product design, process control, laboratory testing or 100% checks for specifically agreed critical features. Buyers should define lot, sample plan, defect classes, measurements and disposition before inspection.

What AQL can and cannot do

Sampling supports a practical accept-or-reject decision without examining every unit. It cannot prove that every item is conforming, and it should not be presented as a certification of general factory quality.

Build a product-specific defect list

A harness may classify an open load-bearing seam, broken buckle or sharp edge differently from a shade variation. A bowl may focus on rim damage, finish, base attachment and capacity. Include photos and measurable tolerances.

Separate functional checks from visual review

Counted measurements, assembly, operation, labeling, carton checks and visual defects need defined methods. If a load, chemical or food-contact claim matters, arrange the appropriate test separately.

Plan disposition before the inspector arrives

State who receives the report, who can authorize rework, how re-inspection is handled and what blocks shipment. Link final release to the approved sample and latest specification revision.
