6 checks before tooling a private-label slow feeder bowl

Six checks before you cut the mould. A slow feeder is a moulded maze, and the maze is the product. Channel width, channel depth, the target kibble size, cleaning access, base grip and total capacity all have to be agreed before the mould is cut, because afterwards any change is a new tool rather than a revision.

THE QUICK ANSWER

A slow feeder is a moulded maze, and the maze is the product. Channel width, channel depth, the target kibble size, cleaning access, base grip and total capacity all have to be agreed before the mould is cut, because afterwards any change is a new tool rather than a revision.

1. Channel width against a stated kibble size

A maze tuned for large kibble does nothing for small kibble, and one tuned too tight stops the dog eating. Name the kibble size range the design targets and validate against it.

2. Channel depth and the resulting capacity

Depth changes both the slowing effect and how much food the bowl actually holds. Quote the usable capacity, not the overall volume.

3. Cleaning access is the top complaint

Narrow channels trap wet food. Check that a normal brush reaches the base of every channel, and state the dishwasher rack position the sample was validated on.

4. Base grip on a real floor

Dogs push these bowls. Test the base on tile and on a wet surface, not on a bench.

5. Material and food contact

Confirm the polymer and the food-contact documentation as part of the quotation rather than as an assumption.

6. Draft angles and a de-mould check

Deep narrow channels are a moulding problem before they are a product problem. Review draft angles with the tooling maker before approving the geometry.
