Why "soft" and "gentle" are not specifications
Adjectives cannot be checked on an incoming lot. Pin length, gauge, angle and density can. Write the four numbers into the specification and the sample becomes a measurement rather than an opinion, which is also what makes a second-source quotation comparable.
The tip finish is the complaint driver
A slicker pin is a bent wire. Whether it grooms or scratches depends on how the cut end is finished. Ask for tip inspection under magnification on a sample set — not one pin — and state it as a lot-level check, because tip rounding is a process that can drift.
Pad flex carries the coat type
The cushion behind the pins decides how much of the coat the brush reaches before the pins load up. A firmer pad suits a dense double coat; a softer pad suits fine or short hair. Decide which coat the range targets before the pad durometer is chosen, because the pad and the pin length work as a pair.
