THE QUICK ANSWER
Start with the fleece jacket if you want one cut-and-sew layer that suits most small and short-coated dogs, takes embroidery and woven labels well and costs less to ship than a padded coat. Add the knit sweater for a cosier, giftable look, knowing it comes from a knitting factory with its own minimums. Keep the padded coat for colder markets, because fill weight and packed volume drive its price. None of the three should carry a temperature rating: describe the fabric, the fill and the fit, not degrees.
Which dogs the layer is for
The American Kennel Club notes that the dogs that most often struggle in the cold are small dogs, especially toy breeds, and dogs without thick fur, and that shaved dogs, young puppies and senior dogs also benefit from a sweater. That decides the size run before the fabric does: most of a winter range sells in the smaller sizes, graded by back length and chest girth rather than by breed name.
Fleece jacket: one fabric, cut and sewn
A fleece jacket is polyester polar fleece with a brushed pile, cut and sewn on the same lines as hoodies and T-shirts. The decisions are the fleece weight in grams per square metre, a single- or double-sided anti-pill finish, the closure and whether a leash opening is cut at the collar. Branding is usually embroidery, a woven label or a rubber patch. On the sample, check pilling after the agreed wash cycles (ISO 12945-2 is a common method), the zip at the collar and the binding at the leg openings.
Knit sweater: a knitting factory, not a sewing line
A knit sweater is knitted from yarn, often acrylic, an acrylic-wool blend or cotton, to a stated gauge, with ribbed neck and leg openings and patterns knitted in rather than printed. It comes from a knitting facility, so its minimum quantity and lead time are set differently from cut-and-sew goods. Check recovery after repeated stretching, pilling and shrinkage after washing; the American Kennel Club notes that most dog sweaters are machine-washable but some need hand washing and air drying, so the care label has to say which.
Padded coat: priced on fill and freight
A padded coat is a woven shell, often with a water-resistant finish, quilted around an insulating fill. It is quoted on fill weight and shell denier first, and it is the bulkiest of the three to ship, so packed carton volume and compression belong in the brief. Check how the fill recovers after vacuum packing, the closure hold and shrinkage after washing, and state the fill weight on the label rather than a warmth claim.
How to choose the first one
If the range needs one winter style that fits the widest market, begin with the fleece jacket. If the brand sells on look and gifting, lead with the knit sweater and plan its minimum separately. If the customers walk in real cold, wind and rain, the padded coat earns its higher price, ideally beside a raincoat for wet days. Many brands add the second style once the size run of the first has been proven.
What to put in the brief
For every style: fabric weight, yarn and gauge or fill weight; the size run with back length and chest girth per size; closure and any harness or leash opening; the branding method; wash temperature and drying method; the packed carton volume; and the sample checks you will approve against. Catidog develops all three at a typical 100–500 units per product, with the facility for each named in the quotation.
